I thought I would write my thoughts about Joffrey down in a half-hearted manner to give you a little insight into my feelings. I don’t know, it’s not really organized or anything, because I’m not that clever. These are just my feelings and I am not trying to justify his actions or woobie him in any way, but I would like to discuss some things about Joffrey in an analytical sense. (ugh, I hate having to write disclaimers, but I don’t want to offend anyone!) 

 Before I go on, I should mention I do have a background in working with children and children from difficult backgrounds so I might empathise with Joffrey in some respects but this comes from my line of work and I do not condone his behaviour or actions.

So, we all know that Joffrey is a sadistic and angry boy, who has no real moral grounding and enjoys tormenting others. He is spoiled and cowardly, he also makes a lot of iffy choices and lets his pride get in the way – all of these things together really create the shitstorm that is his life. Joffrey’s personality traits do not really make for the most pleasant person. His entitlement from being born a prince and later becoming king really amplifies everything. He is in no way a decent human being.

That being said, he is also not just a two-dimensional ‘villain’. It’s the same with Ramsay – these characters are so well written by GRRM, it’s almost insulting that people just lump these characters together as the ‘bad guys’ and don’t even talk about the motivations or reasoning behind their actions. Through Joffrey’s many flaws – he is still a very human character… a child who is struggling with his idea of what a king should and could be, struggling with his own pride and issues.

Like Ramsay, Joffrey wanted his ‘father’ to respect him and approve of him and Robert did not really want anything to do with him. Robert was also violent towards Joffrey and Cersei? “Robert hit the boy so hard I thought he’d killed him.” – now that isn’t just a reprimanding, that is physical abuse. Obviously, I’m not saying that physical abuse is an excuse to behave the way Joffrey does… I’m just saying that the physical abuse of anyone, especially a child, is wrong. I also believe the cold way that Robert treated both his wife and his son is emotional abuse. Joffrey grew up in an abusive and problematic home and this may have had an impact on his cognitive and emotional development. I always empathize with children from abusive homes, it comes with the line of work I’m in and that I love all children dearly. 

It is made quite clear that Joffrey was born with these sadistic and violent tendencies, we can never be sure if this is due to the incest – though I feel as if it is implied that it is possible due to the ‘Targaryen Madness’ references throughout the series. I feel as though Cersei does not help matters by coddling and spoiling Joffrey. Cersei does not step in when she should; she lets him grow wild and unruly. The fault is not all with Cersei (or anyone) but she must bare some of the blame. It is completely expected that a child with no discipline who is given a very powerful position would exploit it.
